| Discussion | Globe Theater Commentary
The original Globe Theatre, where many of Shakespeare's plays were presented for the first time, was damaged in a fire in 1613, and destroyed in the English Civil War of 1643. The historical threater was recently reconstructed on a site near the location of the original, and the new Globe Theater is in regular use for live theatrical performances. Andrew Gumbel, London, p334. Built in 1599 to house Shakespeare's company, The King's Men, and burnt to the ground when the thatch caught alight during a performance of Henry VII in 1613, the Globe was rebuilt in the 1990s due to the inspiration of Sam Wanamaker.
