Discussion Iron Bridge at Coalbrookdale Commentary

Cast iron used elegantly in just the same diagram as a similar compression arch in stone masonry, except that since cast iron is much stronger in compression than stone, the cross-sectional area needed much less. The reduced material needed is what allows this bridge to have such an open, light-looking framework.

Crosses the Severn River with a main span of about 30 meters, or about 100 feet.
Built by iron-founder Abraham Darby III.
