"The site is a grassy hillside at the edge of an evergreen forest, with a breathtaking panorama of meadow below and breaking surf. A redwood thicket, shaped by the wind, extends forward from the forest edge; a small clearing in its center became the location for the house, for vacations for a widow and her three spirited children. Their simultaneous desires for privacy and outlook led to a house which rises out of the shelter of the redwoods to form, above the thicket at the western end, a great faceted bay to command the coastal panorama. A single sloping roof continues the profile of the thicket and allows the upper master bedroom to enjoy similar outlooks."
