“One of the old villas by the coastal road along the Sound has an exceptionally beautiful position in a park studded with tall trees. Steep slopes lead down to the Sound in the East and to Lake Humlebaek in the Northwest. Here, a modern art gallery has been erected through private initiative in conjunction with the old villa, destined for changing exhibitions of significant works of modern international art and of the museum’s own collection of contemporary Danish art. In arranging the new houses, the architects tried to keep the greater part of the large park free from buildings. Three large exhibition halls are placed in the northernmost corner of the site where they face the park with large windows and are connected with the old villa by corridors of varying width. Also included in the scheme are a library and a cafeteria. A fourth exhibition hall was completed in 1966. All the walls are whitewashed. The robust roof beams consist of laminated deal. The beam ends are protected by gilded aluminium sheets. Bargeboards are of teak wood. Inside, the walls are kept white whilst the floors are covered wth brown-red tiles. — Tobias Faber.
