“Monte Albán, the great temple city of the Zapotecs, is ideally situated on a mountain-top in Oaxaca. To the people in the valley it must have seemed the city of the gods. Although the stuccoed and painted decoration has now disappeared from the stonework, the perfect proportions and symmetry of the complex, set on its terraces and platforms, establish it as an architectural masterpiece. The origins of Monte Albán are still shrouded in mystery. Certainly occupied from 500 BC to AD 1469, it presents a record of ever-changing cultures.” — John Julius Norwich, ed.
