| Building Summary | Ocean Beach People's Organic Foods Market, designed by Hanna Gabriel Wells, at Ocean Beach, California, circa 2000. A cooperative grocery store, with steel frame and glass, construction, in a mild temperate climate and semi-urban context. A high-sustainability building, based on rooftop photovoltaics, rooftop solar water heating, energy efficiency, daylighting, shading, and simple materials. | |||
| Heating and Cooling | Main space uses heat recovery from refrigeration for heating and offices use small furnaces. Cooling by natural ventilation. | |||

Owner-initiated green design results in 39% less energy use than than Title-24 standards, based on consultant calculations using EnergyPro energy analysis software.
Details Unique systems include a heat recovery system for the dry air delivery to the front of the casework. Heat recovery was also implemented for building warm-up using a refrigeration condenser. The operable window area for purposes of natural venitilation was based on building code requirements of windows size for floor area. Given the systems and requirements, a particular challenege was keeping a naturally ventillated store's refrigerated case work dry. This was addressed by having an action light coming on when the interior humitidy rises above a certain level which notifies the occupants to close windows and turn on the air tempering system for the case work. A design concern was a lack of funding to achieve confidence in the design of the natural ventillation and the heat recovery systems to ensure protection of produce. A basic DDC system is used for monitoring for tempered air, lighting, and office units. |
