| Discussion | San Miguel Commentary
"San Miguel de la Escalada, near Leon, is the finest and largest of the Mozarabic churches. It was founded by Córdoban refugees and relies upon some of the craft traditions of the Mosque of Córdoba. It has a basilican plan, with a nave of five bays, and fine horseshoe arches on antique columns (probably from a late Roman or Visigothic church on the same site) which are returned across the nave as an iconostasis screen. The three eastern apses are of horseshoe form, in plan, with lobed domical vaults, the whole enclosed within a single masonry mass. The high timber ceiling is later in date and decorated in the Mudéjar manner. There is a shallow clerestory with small horseshoe-headed openings, and a southern portico of about 930 with twelve arched bays similar to those of the nave arcades." Sir Banister Fletcher. A History of Architecture. p346. | |||||
