“For all the manifest differences in their general appearance, an ideological bond links Scharoun’s Schminke House of 1932 to the farm which Häring had realized at Garkau some eight years before; Scharoun being committed to Häring’s ‘organic approach’ throughout his long career. There is, however, a peculiar lightness of touch and even a suggestion of whimsy in the steel-framed Schminke House which is characteristic of Scharoun and, while the main body of the structure has an essentially orthogonal organization, this is suddenly twisted towards the main view; the ‘head’ of the house being organically emphasized as in Aalto’s Villa Mairea. This head or belvedere form was appropriately occupied by an elevated formal dining room on the ground floor and a master bedroom above. Both the dining area and the bedroom were provided with generous terraces and these elements are projected as cantilevered flying forms which extend towards the vista.”
