Discussion | School in Glasgow Commentary
“The School, a commission for the firm Honeyman, Keppie & Mackintosh, was designed by Mackintosh in 1903 within the stringent limitations of school board costing. A co-educational school, it required separate main entrances and suggested a symmetrical plan. Built of red sandstone and reaching to three storeys, it contains twenty-one classrooms. A horizontal line is emphasised in the placement of twin staircase bays at each extremity. “Mackintosh created airy interiors and used simple white glazed tiling to face walls and piers. Still in use for its original purpose, the School is recognised as one of Mackintosh’s most attractive buildings. It is owned by the Corporation of Glasgow which has undertaken to preserve it.” — Jackie Cooper, ed. Mackintosh Architecture: The Complete Buildings and Selected Projects. p46. | |
