| Discussion | Ste.-Foy at Conques Commentary
"Begun by Abbot Odolric (1030-65), the abbey church was, in fact, completed at the start of the 12th century, being then based on a different plan, especially for the apse, than that originally envisaged. The six-bayed nave with side aisles leads to a large transept, itself bordered by aisles and provided with two chapels on either arm; it terminates in an apse surrounded by an ambulatory with three radiating chapels. The elevation is equally impressive: tribunes open on to the central vessel of the nave through twin bays. They are covered by half-barrel vaults which shoulder those of the nave. The already considerable amount of light is increased still further by the lantern tower of the crossing, whose original dome was replaced in the 14th century by a rib vault." John Julius Norwich. The World Atlas of Architecture. p199. | ||||
