Discussion Steel Residences Commentary

These are two residences constructed on a three-acre Bridgehampton site. Sandy soils required pile construction in the vacation home for a family of five. Family sleeping quarters were consolidated on a single floor with guest quarters on a separate level. Privacy from the roadway and convenient access to the beach and panoramic ocean views was an objective challenged by the relative proximity of surrounding structures to the east and north.A large double-height communal space provides ample area for entertaining guests while linking the various layers of adjacent living space.

— Darlene Levy. drawn from Kay Breslow. Charles Gwathmey & Robert Siegel: Residential Works 1966-1977. p60-61.

Structure and Materials: Wood pilings capped by concrete grade beams, which in turn act as footings for concrete slab. Wood frame. Laminated wood curved girders. 1"x 4" tongue -and-groove cedar siding, both interior and exterior, treated with bleaching oil. Seamless Dexotex floors. Ceramic tile. Five-ply built-up roofing with white marble chips. Redwood decking. Cabinetwork: birch plywood with lacquer and laminated plastic finish. Aluminum-framed sliding doors and windows. Oil-fired, hot water heating system with fin-tube convectors.
