| Discussion | Temple of Brahmeswara Commentary
“Buvaneshvar was the residence of the kings of Kalinga and has more than a hundred temples built between the eighth and thirteenth centuries. The main temple of Brahmeshvara is surrounded by four secondary shrines.” — Henri Stierlin. Comprende l’Architecture universelle. p274. “The Temple of Brahmeswara, at Bhubaneswar in Orissa, erected at the end of the 9th century AD, is richly carved inside and out. At Bhubaneswar, 7,000 Hindu shrines, dating from the 8th to the 12th centuries, once encircled Bindu Sarovar, the sacred artificial lake. Today, 500 remain. The basic structure of the Orissan temple has two connecting buildings. The smaller is the jagamohan, or assembly hall. Behind it is the sikhara, the towering sanctuary. Later temples have two additional halls in front—one for dancing, the other for banquets.” — John Julius Norwich, ed. Great Architecture of The World. p26. | |
