Discussion Temple of Venus and Rome Commentary

"This unusual building was designed by the emperor himself, overriding the criticism of his former architect, Apollodorus of Damascus, who was not afraid to express his dissatisfaction with the project. In A.D. 283, a fire destroyed the roof, and the temple was rebuilt by Maxentius, who retained the original plan. It called for twin cellas back to back, each cella a 70-foot square with a coffered apse toward the center of the building, and a coffered, barrel-vaulted ceiling. In designing a double cella, it was evidently Hadrian's intention to allude to the Athenian Parthenon and its opisthodomus."
