UCSF Genentech Hall Commentary
In its general presentation and appearance, UCSF Genentech Hall at Mission Bay is a broadly conventional large-scale biological research laboratory and advanced teaching building. The particular basis of its high energy efficiency is the sophisticated environmental control systems and central heating, ventilating, and cooling plant.
"The building was designed from the inside out reflecting the architectural design style in which we do science at UCSF. The open lab design, clusters of offices and interaction spaces all encourage communication and interdisciplinary approaches. There are hardly any doors in the labs that can be closed."
Peter Walter, professor and chair of biochemistry and biostatistics, Genentech Hall executive committee.
Details
Address: UCSF Mission Bay Campus, at Sixteenth and Owens, San Francisco, California
434,000 square feet.
Includes laboratories (wet and dry), offices, classrooms, library, lecture hall, 263-seat auditorium, outdoor terraces and amphitheater.
Occupied by 900 staff and scientists, including 60 principal investigators in programs including structural and chemical biology, molecular cell and developmental biology.
Construction cost of $168 million according to UCSF.
Energy efficient design features contribute to the building exceeding California Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24, 2001) by 22.5%.
50,000 square feet of energy-efficient glass used in double-paned windows to minimize direct sunlight on lab benches.
