Building Summary UCSF Genentech Hall, designed by SmithGroup, at San Francisco, California, 1999 to 2003.
A medical research laboratory and teaching building, with steel frame and glass construction, in a mild temperate climate and urban context, with sophisticated central HVAC systems and glazing providing a high level of overall energy efficiency.
Interior Lighting Central energy management system (EMS) controls most lighting. General lighting uses T-8 florescent lamps with electronic ballasts.
Interior Lighting Discussion UCSF Genentech Hall Interior Lighting

In general, lighting levels were designed to meet basic California Title-24 standards. The fixtures to meet those standard lighting levels use efficient T-8 florescent lamps with electronic ballasts, rather than standard-practice T-12 lamps with magnetic ballasts. The result is a lighting power density of 1.2 watts/ft2, compared to the Title 24 allowable lighting power density of 1.40 watts/ft2.

The building has some occupancy-based lighting controls. Most lights are controlled by a central energy management system (EMS) using time of day, with automatic lights-off warnings to occupants.

There is no particular daylighting design, although one side of the main atrium is glazed several stories tall. Lab spaces do have more window views and concomitant sidelighting than was typical in earlier generations of lab buildings.
