| Energy Efficient Buildings | Building Sustainability Envelope Interior Lighting HVAC | ||
| Building Summary | UCSF Genentech Hall, designed by SmithGroup, at San Francisco, California, 1999 to 2003. A biological research laboratory and teaching building, with steel frame and glass, in a mild temperate climate and urban campus context. |
| Sustainability | A large research and teaching building, with sophisticated central HVAC systems and glazing providing a high level of overall energy efficiency. | ||
| Overall Energy Efficiency | The UCSF Mission Bay Research Laboratory is designed to use 22.5% less energy than minimum California Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24, 2001).
| ||
| Building Envelope | R-19 wall insulation, R-21 roof insulation, and lightly tinted glazing with 0.26 U-value 0.36 shading coefficient, as well as fritted glass with slightly better performance. Building Envelope details |
| Interior Construction | Conventional concrete composite metal decking floors and typical interior partitions of gypsum board on light metal framing. Not LEED rated. Interior Construction details |
| Interior Lighting | Central energy managment system (EMS) controls most lighting. General lighting uses T-8 flourescent lamps with electronic ballasts. Lighting details |
| Heating and Cooling |
The large built-up system runs 24/7 with computer-based central energy management system (EMS) for monitoring and control. Equipment includes chillers and boilers with VFD pumps and fans throughout. Heating and Cooling details |
| Indoor Air Quality | 100% outside air replacement ventilation. Areas requiring isolation (due to potential cross-contamination or air-borne hazards) are sequestered by automatic airlocks. |
| Site Features | With high density due to compact massing, this campus building makes efficient use of valuable urban land area. Large public-scale steps at the atrium entry enfront the interior landscape and support and encourage informal social interaction. |

| Sustainability Discussion | UCSF Genentech Hall Sustainability
In its general presentation and appearance, UCSF Genentech Hall at Mission Bay is a broadly conventional large-scale biological laboratory and advanced teaching building. The particular basis of its high energy efficiency is the sophisticated environmental control systems and central heating, ventilating, and cooling plant. Additional efficiencies in electric lighting and building envelope also contribute to overall building energy comsumption savings of 22.5% compared to minimum requirments. Details |
