"Thus Wingspread, unique prairie house near Racine [Wisconsin], became another in the series of zoning experiments...built in 1909, where living room, dining room, kitchen, family sleeping rooms, guest rooms, were separate unites grouped together and connected by corridors.

The building is oriented so that the sunlight falls in all rooms and the ground plan shows a complete logical expression of a zoned house.

At the center of four zones forming a cross, stands a spacious wigwam of a living room. A tall central brick chimney stack with five fireplaces on four sides divides this large vertical central living space into four areas for the various domestic functions: entrance, family living, library, and dining room. Extending from this great, dignified central wigwam are the four wings. This extended plan lies, very much at home, quiet and integral with the prairie landscape which is, through it, made more significant and beautiful....

This house, while resembling the Coonley House at Riverside, Illinois, is more bold, masculine, and direct in form and treatment. It is better executed, in more permanent materials. The building has a heavy footing course of Ksasota sandstone resting on rock ballast laid deep in broad trenches,..."
