(b. Colmar, Alsace 1834; d. 1904)
Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was a French sculptor who originally studied painting under Ari Scheffer. his major scupltures include "Switzerland Succoring Strabourg", at Basel, Switzerland, statues at Colmar, at Clermont-Ferrand, at Belfort, in Paris, and at Union Square in New York. He is said to have been a Freemason. The face of the Statue of Liberty is said to be that of his mother.
