This house and photo studio for the architect’s brother is an adaptive re-use of an existing stone barn, in addition to new construction, in the hills of the French border of Spain. The site selection was a multi-year process between the architect and his related client, an unusually long period of time. Fifteen years after the completion of this project, the architect and his photographer brother again teamed up on a second residence and photo studio, this time on the Mediterranean Sea.
The new construction is divided into separate volumes, with the metaphor of fragmentation driving its design. The existing crumbling stone barn was rebuilt as part of this, and now serves as the expansive photo studio. While the existing barn was selected for its spatial and aesthetic qualities, this project demonstrates how adaptive-reuse can be a strategy used in a progressive design agenda.
